Georgina Viu
Dancer
Georgina Vilu is a Barcelona-born cellist, dancer and multidisciplinary artist based in London, whose work explores the relationship between classical music, flamenco and Spanish cultural heritage. Her artistic journey began at the age of three through dance, developing a deep connection to flamenco through her grandmother, originally from the province of Córdoba in Andalusia. This early exposure to Spanish traditions shaped her understanding of the intimate relationship between music and movement, which continues to define her artistic identity.
Alongside her training in flamenco and classical ballet, Georgina began studying the cello at the age of six, pursuing both disciplines throughout her formative years. As a young musician, she performed with leading Spanish youth orchestras, including the Jove Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona (JOSB), and participated in numerous international cello masterclasses, further developing her musical artistry.
At eighteen, Georgina moved to London to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Cello Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, supported by the Derek Butler Scholarship (2022). She subsequently completed a Master’s degree in Cello Performance, graduating with Distinction. During her studies, she received several awards and distinctions, including the Alan Kirby Conducting Prize (2022), the John Thompson String Quartet Ensemble Prize (2023), and support from the Barbara & David Alen Scholarship Fund (2023).
Her postgraduate research focused on the relationship between twentieth-century Spanish classical music and its folk traditions, exploring how elements of regional musical heritage are embedded within classical compositions. This research deepened her interest in the expressive possibilities of combining live classical music with flamenco, bringing together two artistic languages that have accompanied her throughout her life.
Following her studies, Georgina began developing her own multidisciplinary artistic projects, seeking to bridge her experience as a classical musician with her lifelong dedication to dance. This vision led to the creation of Alma Ensemble.
As Founder and Artistic Director of Alma Ensemble, Georgina oversees the ensemble’s artistic direction, repertoire, choreography, programming and creative development. Alongside her work as a performer and choreographer, she curates multidisciplinary productions that bring musicians and dancers together, exploring new interpretations of Spanish musical heritage while preserving the authenticity and expressive power of its traditions.
